8 Informative Indigenous Podcasts

Our team has curated a selection of eight remarkable Indigenous podcasts that will not only broaden your understanding but also deepen your appreciation for Indigenous world-views, traditions, and struggles.

In a world increasingly connected through technology and social media, podcasts have emerged as a powerful medium for storytelling, education, and fostering meaningful conversations. Among the diverse range of podcast genres and topics, there is a growing wave of Indigenous podcasts that provide a unique and authentic perspective on the rich tapestry of Indigenous cultures, histories, and contemporary issues.

Indigenous voices have long been marginalized and overshadowed, often excluded from mainstream narratives. However, the rise of Indigenous podcasts is reclaiming the power of storytelling, offering a platform for Indigenous individuals and communities to share their lived experiences, challenges, triumphs, and ancestral knowledge. These podcasts not only inform and educate but also challenge stereotypes, dismantle misconceptions, and celebrate the vibrancy and resilience of Indigenous cultures.

Here are just a few that we recommend to our community.

Mapping the Doctrine of Discovery: This podcast identifies systems of domination that have been sustained by greed and power, through the subjugation of human beings and the natural world. Hosts Prof Philip Arnold and Sandy Bigtree (Mohawk) map the relationship of European colonizers and native people starting in 1492. Although we were taught Columbus was in search of spices, he was actually sailing under 15th century Papal edicts known as the Doctrines of Christian Discovery.

Native Film Talk: Host Ian Allison (Navajo) explores Native representation in films and movies. Native American representation in film is as old as the film industry itself, so there is a plethora of content available for review. He watches everything from documentaries and old westerns, to more modern hits like Reservation Dogs and Grey’s Anatomy.
